Twenty years ago that meant finding a musician to re-record it; today it means moving the whole track down three semitones — without it slowing down into sludge. Pitch-shifting is the mirror twin of time-stretching: one moves the key and locks the tempo, the other moves the tempo and locks the key.
Most karaoke and backing tracks are in the original artist's key — which is statistically not yours. Transposing ±2-3 semitones turns an unsingable song into your song, at the exact same tempo you rehearsed.
Two tracks at compatible tempos but clashing keys won't blend harmonically. Shift one into the other's key (or a related one) and the collision becomes a chord.

Pitch-shifting is the same signal surgery as time-stretching, with one extra trap: voices carry formants — the resonances that make a voice sound human and theirs. Shift a vocal too far and the formants travel with it: upward becomes chipmunk, downward becomes movie-trailer demon. Instruments tolerate more than voices.
The practical rule: ±2-3 semitones is usually transparent on a full mix, ±4-5 workable, beyond that it's an effect. On isolated vocals, halve those numbers — or embrace the effect, half the charts do.
