Your ears process music one instant at a time. A spectrogram shows you the whole story at once: time runs left to right, frequency runs bottom to top, and brightness is energy. Once you can read it, a three-minute song becomes a page you can scan — and a surprising number of problems that hide from your ears sit in plain sight on the picture.

What things look like

Every sound has a visual signature:

A kick drum

A short bright burst hugging the bottom (40-100 Hz), with a thin vertical edge (the click of the beater).

A bassline

A thick glowing band along the floor that steps up and down with the notes.

A voice

A ladder of parallel horizontal lines (the harmonics) that bend together as the melody moves. The spacing between rungs is the pitch.

Hi-hats and cymbals

A fine mist across the top of the image.

Sibilance ("s" sounds)

Sharp bright flashes between 5-10 kHz. If they're the brightest thing on the picture, your de-esser has work to do.

The telltale signs worth hunting

This is where the spectrogram earns its place in your toolkit:

The brick wall at 16 kHz. A "WAV" or "FLAC" whose energy stops dead in a hard horizontal line around 16 kHz is a converted MP3 wearing a lossless costume. Real lossless material fades gradually toward 20 kHz and beyond. If you buy stems, beats or sample packs, this one check protects your money.

The horizontal line that never moves. A thin, constant stripe at 50 Hz (Europe) or 60 Hz (US) is mains hum — a ground problem in the recording chain. Its skinnier siblings at 100/150 Hz are the harmonics.

Vertical needles. Full-height thin spikes are clicks and pops — a bad edit, a plugin glitch, vinyl dust.

The empty floor. No energy below 40 Hz? Fine for a folk song, a problem for a trap master. The spectrogram answers "is there actually sub in my sub?" faster than any speaker.

FAQ

Spectrogram or spectrum analyzer — what's the difference?

A spectrum analyzer shows one instant (frequency vs level, dancing in real time). A spectrogram shows the whole timeline at once. The analyzer is a thermometer; the spectrogram is the medical history.

Can a spectrogram prove a file is really lossless?

It can prove the opposite with confidence: a hard shelf at 16 kHz is a lossy source, whatever the file extension says. A full spectrum is strong evidence of — but not an absolute guarantee of — a clean chain.

What do the colors mean?

Only intensity: dark = silence, bright = energy. The color map is cosmetic; the shapes are the information.
