What is a split sheet?
A split sheet is a simple document that records who contributed to a song and what percentage of the royalties goes to each collaborator. It usually covers both the recording (the master) and the song (the work itself: music + lyrics), and everyone involved signs it. It's a working document: it writes down the shares everyone agreed on, so everyone refers to the same figures later.
Why are the recording and the song split separately?
They are two independent shares, usually paid by different sources. The recording (the master) is the audio file itself — streaming and download income flows to it, usually through your distributor or label. The song is the work underneath (music + lyrics) — its income is collected through a separate channel. The same person can hold a different percentage on each side, so each side must total 100% on its own.
Does each side really have to add up to 100%?
Yes. The recording shares must total 100% and the song shares must total 100%, independently. The calculator checks both totals live and turns green only when each side hits exactly 100%. It won't let you export a split sheet while either side is off, so you never sign an invalid document.
